Description
Chef John’s Hot Sloppy Joe Dip is a crowd-pleasing party appetizer. It’s a warm, cheesy dip with all the flavors of a classic sloppy joe sandwich.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- Tortilla chips or crackers for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and stir in the softened cream cheese until smooth and well combined.
- Spread the mixture evenly into a 9-inch pie plate or a small baking dish.
- Sprinkle the cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack cheese over the top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with chopped green onions.
- Serve hot with tortilla chips or crackers.
Notes
- For a spicier dip, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a diced jalapeno to the beef mixture.
- You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and refrigerate it. Add the cheeses just before baking.
- If you don’t have both cheddar and Monterey Jack, you can use all of one or a different cheese blend.
