Description

Chef John’s Hot Sloppy Joe Dip is a crowd-pleasing party appetizer. It’s a warm, cheesy dip with all the flavors of a classic sloppy joe sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • Tortilla chips or crackers for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the softened cream cheese until smooth and well combined.
  5. Spread the mixture evenly into a 9-inch pie plate or a small baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack cheese over the top.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Garnish with chopped green onions.
  9. Serve hot with tortilla chips or crackers.

Notes

  • For a spicier dip, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a diced jalapeno to the beef mixture.
  • You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and refrigerate it. Add the cheeses just before baking.
  • If you don’t have both cheddar and Monterey Jack, you can use all of one or a different cheese blend.
